Wind Turbine Gearbox Appreciation
Because I have spent as much time and loving care on wind power as I have devoted to designer dresses, I do understand wind turbine gearbox fundamentals. In my "elegant" wind turbine design, the blades turn the crankshaft, which in turn spins the generator, converting the wind's energy into electricity. The gearbox controls the rate at which the crankshaft turns so that I get more or less constant and continuous energy and I minimize the risk of burning-up my generator in high winds. I even understand the analogy with the gears on my mountain bike: the big gears help me get more electric energy from less wind power,.
