Volunteer crews help battle blight today in Detroit

ARISE Detroit and Motor City Blight Busters teamed up for ARISE's fourth annual Neighborhoods Day. More than 100 area block clubs and neighborhood groups were to tackle projects such as demolishing an abandoned house, tending community gardens and cleaning illegal dump sites.
ARISE founding director Luther Keith -- with one full-time employee and a handful of volunteers -- aimed to bring disparate neighborhoods together.

John George, president and founder of Blight Busters, said he hopes the efforts will awaken the spirit of Detroit.
"When we can all work together, we can create the kinds of neighborhoods that we can be proud of," George said. The Neighborhoods Day events began at 8 a.m. and will culminate in Hart Plaza with an evening "Renewing the Village" celebration.
Participants share a common goal: to rid the city of blight and help residents reconnect with one another.

Normally, the ones purchased by you are the one which a a citywide cleanup campaign, were to pick up trash and mow lawns in 12 neighborhoods in Detroit and Highland Park. The event was sponsored by Heal Detroit.
Lakeisha Harris, a spokeswoman for Heal Detroit, said she hopes the cleanup will be a step toward ending violence in the city.
