Palio protectors up in arms over virtual go-kart race

The game, Gran Turismo 5, allows players to race motorised go-karts around a virtual reconstruction of Siena’s main piazza, around which jockeys on horseback thunder in a fiercely-contested event that dates back centuries.

Siena officials claim that the makers of the game, Sony Computer Entertainment, have featured key symbols of the horse race without obtaining permission.. Burberry bag bag is obviously a treasure, and for many reasons other than the fact they you'll have a great desi

They say the pastel-coloured palazzos which line the square, as well as Siena’s famous Palazzo Pubblico and its tall bell tower, are clearly visible in the game, which is due to be released in early November.

“It is not right that they should use images of the contrade, including their flags, without obtaining authorisation,” said Anna Carli, from the Committee for the Protection of the Palio.

The city was determined to defend the cultural integrity of the Palio and would consult lawyers before deciding what legal action to take, she said.

A spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment in London declined to comment.

The event provided the backdrop to a spectacular rooftop chase in the James Bond movie Quantum of Solace, starring Daniel Craig as 007. Siena town council on that occasion gave permission for the scene to be filmed, although the filmmakers had to agree to treat the race with full respect.

The row is the latest to hit the Palio, which is held each year on July 2 and Aug 16, attracting tens of thousands of tourists every summer.

Italy’s tourism minister caused outrage in the Tuscan city earlier this month when she compared the event to bullfighting in Spain and suggested that it should be banned because it was cruel to the horses that take part.
