Millions Hunt For Christmas Bargains
The retail war that is the winter sales has begun as customers launched the hunt for post-Christmas bargains.London's Oxford Street was crammed with shoppers with long queues forming at Selfridges, including a four hour wait to enter the Gucci department.
Natasha Burton, marketing manager at retail analysts Footfall, said it was difficult to compare it with Boxing Day 2004 because last year's was on a Sunday.
But she said department stores "have done a better job this year of getting people back in".
Most of the 230 shops in the Trafford Centre, Manchester, were open and the main 10,000 capacity car park was almost full by 10am.
Despite fears of a financial downturn this Christmas, Selfridges and John Lewis were not the only retailers breaking records.
A spokeswoman for Birmingham's Bullring shopping centre said Christmas Eve marked the end of its most successful week since it re-opened in September 2003.

At Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex the first car was spotted at 5am.
Marketing manager Clare Lamont said the 285-shop complex handled the flow of people well.
