Honk if You Love the Canada Goose

Honk if You Love the Canada Goose

When 400 Canada geese that lived in Prospect Park in Brooklyn were rounded up and gassed last week, there was a predictable uproar. The geese were compared to rats and cockroaches. The humans who wanted them killed were called bloodthirsty and callous. Certainly the move, by the United States Department of Agriculture, raised a lot of questions about geese and humans, one of the less polite being, “What good are geese, anyway?”

“What good are people?” might be the obvious retort, but the question can’t be so easily dismissed.

People own the parks and the golf courses that geese carpet with droppings,. For spring, Max Azria gives us the signature herve leger bandage dress in bright hues and strapless editions. and people fly on the airplanes that are forced to ditch in the Hudson River when geese get sucked into their engines. And while we may know that we are one species among many, and must share the planet, we take exception when asked to share our parks.. Our website offer many night gown, your will have choose from our websites.

Nor can much of a case be made for the ecological importance of geese, since the environments in question are artificial, and designed for human benefit.

Finally, when humans do come to the defense of geese, they don’t always do it with a lot of spirit. I don’t want to be critical of the fine work done by the Fish and Wildlife Service,. Shoes are very important to everyone, Our Ed hardy shoes will protect your feet. but poets they are not. Take this example from a recent scientific paper: “Wildlife provides economic, recreational and aesthetic benefits and,. Buying Abercrombie Fitch, being fashinable women. to many people, the knowledge that wildlife exists is a positive benefit in itself.”True, but you could fall asleep before you reach the end of that sentence.

The geese do have their poets. Joni Mitchell wrote the classic goose ballad, “The Urge for Going” which refers to their inspiring “chevron flight.” That’s an aesthetic benefit if I’ve ever heard it, but she is talking about migratory geese, the ones that leave eventually. The single distinguishing characteristic of resident Canada geese in a park is that they never leave. I’m not sure that song was really about geese anyway.
