Ex-Banker Lined Up To Be New M&S Chairman

Marks & Spencer is lining up former Citigroup banker Robert Swannell to become its new chairman, says Sky's City editor Mark Kleinman.

He is set to take over from M&S boss Sir Stuart Rose, who is expected to step down next spring.

Mr Swannell was involved in helping the retail giant in its defence against a bid from Sir Philip Green in 2004.

"The person won't necessarily be as high profile as Sir Stuart, but be able to handle the boardroom politics and the requirements that come with being M&S chairman.

"These include standing up at the company's annual meeting and talking to the small shareholders about the things they have discovered on their latest shopping trip to M&S.

"So it's a particularly demanding role as far as British chairmanships are concerned."

Kleinman went on: "M&S says no final decision has been made and would not comment to me on Robert Swannell's prospective appointment."

Mr Swannell has been an investment banker since joining Schroders in 1977 and stayed with the company through the takeover by US bank Citigroup in 2000.
