Divers search Hamburg Township lake for missing man
A father presumed drowned in Zukey Lake after rescuing his 15-year-old son and another boy was an excellent swimmer and avid boater familiar with Livingston County's chain of seven lakes, neighbors said.
Dennis Regal, 58, of Hamburg Township was not new to rescuing swimmers, either. About eight years ago, Regal rescued two kids in an overturned canoe on Whitewood Lake, police said.
Police said a search by divers for Regal was called off Tuesday night and was expected to resume today.
In Monroe County, divers found the body of 16-year-old Louis Barba of Detroit, who apparently drowned Tuesday afternoon after following a lost ball into deep water in Lake Erie off Monroe County's Sterling State Park, Coast Guard officials said.
Along Zukey Lake, family and friends of Regal waited near Lakeland Marina in 90-degree temperatures as divers from the Livingston and Washtenaw counties' sheriff's offices hunted for the missing man.. The deep, murky water and lack of witnesses to the exact place Regal went under made the search difficult, Hamburg Township Police Chief Steve Luciano said.
"I don't know if it was physical exhaustion or if he had a medical condition," Luciano said. "It is physically exhausting to rescue someone. It is not uncommon for a rescuer to become a victim."
