Palfrey, 52, was on bail having been convicted by a federal jury last month of running a prostitution service that catered to members of Washington's political elite.

Senator David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican, was among her clients and Randall Tobias, head of the US Agency for International Development, stepped down after being namedas a patron.

Palfrey was convicted of money laundering, using the mail for illegal purposes and racketeering and was facing six years in prison when sentenced on July 24.
