Appeal To Shooting Suspect To Contact Cops
Police searching for a man believed to have shot his ex-girlfriend and killed her lover as well as shooting an officer have appealed for him to contact detectives.
They have revealed the suspect Raoul Thomas Moat thought his former girlfriend Samantha Stobbart was having an affair with a Northumbria police officer.
But the local force said this was not the case.
Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Adamson told a news conference that 37-year-old Moat had contacted police on Saturday.
Appealing directly to Moat, Mr Adamson said: "You have told us that police are not taking you seriously. Moat, from Newcastle, was only released from Durham prison on Thursday having served a sentence for assault. He is believed to be a former nightclub bouncer.
The assault for which Moat served "a few weeks" in prison was "a lower level assault in connection with family members", Mr Adamson said. It was not against Ms Stobbart.
The 22-year-old was shot through her living room window in the early hours of Saturday morning by a man armed with a shotgun.
